‘American Experience: Stonewall Uprising’

KPBS, Monday, April 25, 9:30 p.m.

The Stonewall Inn

While there were more than a few pro-gay demonstrations and protests before the Stonewall Riots in 1969, it was Stonewall that has become the symbolic beginning of the modern gay rights movement, and its anniversary is what Pride celebrations mark every year.

If you don’t know the story already, or if you only think you know it, this celebrated documentary will show you how a rag tag bunch of drag queens, hustlers and bull dykes got fed up and, on the night after Judy Garland’s funeral, took on the viciously homophobic bullies of the New York Police Department and changed world history.
