Against Me! rocker Tom Gabel comes out as transgenderTop Highlights Wednesday, May 9th, 2012
Tom Gabel, singer for the rock band Against Me!, has come out as transgender to friends and fans this week in anticipation of a highly revelatory interview with Rolling Stone magazine.
Gabel, who plans to begin living as a woman and take the name Laura Jane Grace, tells Rolling Stone that she will continue on with the band and remain married to her wife, Heather, who she describes as being “super-amazing and understanding” about the impending transition. Contributing Editor Josh Eells spoke with Gabel about her complete story, including her history of gender dysphoria and plans for the future. Eells says of Gabel, “She was very open and honest and generous throughout the whole process. There wasn’t a single question she wouldn’t answer.” He added that the singer chose to reveal her transgender identity via Rolling Stone in order to “get the news out all at once,” and to “push herself” in the hopes of communicating openly and honestly with the public.
“I’m going to have embarrassing moments,” Gabel told Eells, “and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
Eells’ interview with Gabel hits newsstands on Friday, May 11th.
