The emperor has no clothes

Special Comment

Carl DeMaio

There will be a gay candidate for San Diego mayor, Carl DeMaio, who will walk in the Pride parade and likely be seen at a myriad of Pride events throughout the weekend. DeMaio’s presence is an attempt to fool the assembled crowd this weekend.

You may remember the children’s story, The Emperor’s New Clothes. The story is about an emperor who is fooled by tailors who tell him that they will make him a suit of clothes so beautiful that only smart people will be able to see it.

Of course, none of the emperor’s subjects dared say that they could not see the clothes because they would be deemed stupid. When Carl DeMaio marches in the Pride parade Saturday, he is hoping that the LGBT community is like the emperor’s townspeople; many will applaud and cheer because he is a gay candidate, regardless of his views.

Carl DeMaio is a gay, right-wing candidate, whose policies do not deserve the support of the LGBT community. Whether it is union-busting, or his refusal to take up the LGBT civil rights fight, DeMaio is gay but he does not care about LGBT issues.

DeMaio will walk in the Pride parade; I hope he will bring his partner. DeMaio has avoided any photo opportunities with his partner because DeMaio is having pillow talk with the anti-LGBT forces in San Diego. Those forces would not be pleased if DeMaio was shown on the front page of the San Diego Union Tribune with his partner.

DeMaio has promised his supporters, who are against marriage equality, that LGBT issues will not be part of his administration. This is in direct contrast to our current Republican mayor, Jerry Sanders.

Sanders deserves our applause and cheers. Sanders is the co-chair of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry. DeMaio has yet to say whether he would even join that group.

I recently watched a rerun of Will & Grace entitled Star Spangled Banter. In essence, the episode was about the conflict between Will and Grace due to a gay candidate and a Jewish candidate squaring off in a city council election.

Will supported the gay candidate and Grace the Jewish candidate; and comedy ensued. The point of the episode; neither Will nor Grace knew their candidates’ positions. The gay candidate was a right-wing nut and the Jewish candidate made a racist remark.

The lesson of the episode was to know your candidates’ positions and don’t give them your support just because of their sexual orientation or ethnicity.

In The Emperor’s New Clothes, a young boy finally says, “He has nothing on,” as the king passes by in a parade. The San Diego LGBT community has a choice; we can be lemmings, like Will and Grace, and applaud and cheer our gay candidate; or we can be the little boy who told the truth. We know that DeMaio has no clothes; he does not support us. And worse, he cavorts with those who hate us. We should let DeMaio know that we are not stupid by demonstrating with silence as he parades by.

  1. Please join us and TURN YOUR BACKS ON CARL at the PRIDE Parade Saturday. He has been truning his back on us for years. Here is the EZ facebook link:

  2. I was for Bonnie.I thought that made sense. I stand by it and abstain. My only power is my power of boycott. You all lost me at Bonnie. AG360.

  3. Moon him.

  4. Who is Johnathan Hale, aka John Wyckoff, aka Johnathan Hackett?

  5. This article is typical LGBT Weekly misguided trash-talk. Carl DeMaio has never turned his back on the LGBT community—just look at his voting record. It’s interesting how quickly the LGBT community has turned on one of its own and it’s shameful that this gossip tabloid continues to perpetuate hate and discord in our community. Grow up, Stampp.

  6. Carl did not have fun at the PRIDE Parade: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKrA0zBrifI&sns=fb.

A 5 minute tape taken at several different venues during the Parade, totally representative of the reception Carl received.

Not what a politician running for office wants to hear at a Parade.

    But music to my ears.

  7. I do agree with all of the ideas you’ve presented on your post. They are really convincing and will certainly work. Nonetheless, the posts are too short for beginners. Could you please extend them a little from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.
