Boos, Bayard and Big Mike

Commentary: Conversations with Nicole

Daniel Sanchez, Gordon Ramsay and Juan Carlos Ortega at Ortega’s

Well, my doctor made me cancel my Texas trip last weekend and so I got to enjoy some of our Pride, but the heat made a lot of participation impossible.

GLBTs boo, turn their backs on DeMaio

It was so noticeable that even the Union-Tribune, among other media, reported that people all along the Pride parade route booed or turned their backs on radical right-wing homophobe-backed gay Republican Tea Party favorite Carl DeMaio, who is in a run-off for mayor against Congressman Bob Filner – who received huge applause and cheers.

Never in the 37-year history of our parade has any candidate been booed (DeMaio was also booed at the flag raising rally). Word is DeMaio had to hire extra security. Wake up San Diego, as they say – who knows you better than your own community.

NABWMT and Bayard Rustin

Last week, City Councilman Todd Gloria and I had the honor of officially welcoming the national convention of the National Association of Black and White Men Together (NABWMT), one of our community’s oldest organizations for more than 3 decades with chapters in more than 30 cities. Everyone, and I mean everyone, should see this film or read the books on him.

During one of their events they showed the award-winning documentary Brother Outsider, the life of Bayard Rustin.

People, politics and opinions

Word is that about six San Diegans have applied to become the next state executive director of Equality California (And no, Delores Jacobs isn’t on of them.)

Linda Perine has recently moved into the 3rd District and rumor has it that she has illusions of running for City Council. Well, all I’ve got to say is I know and have worked with Chris Kehoe and Toni Atkins, and you, Linda, are certainly no Kehoe or Atkins.

Is it true that Carl DeMaio is letting some gay city commissioners know that if they support Bob Filner he will make sure they are no longer commissioners if he gets into office? (My city commission term ends in 2016.)

Look for Carl DeMaio to drop another million dollars of his own money into his campaign. He once told me he would blow up to $4 million of his money to win, and he sure wasn’t kidding.

Look for a future ceremony adding more people to our community’s Wall of Honor at The Center.

The event honoring Pioneers, Trailblazers and Heroes will be announced soon.

A young man, who weighs almost 300 pounds, won the Mr. Gay Pride San Diego contest, and I say, bravo to him!

Check out Vito, the documentary now playing about the life of gay icon Vito Russo.

Chef Ramsay loves Ortega’s

World-renowned and acclaimed popular chef, Gordon Ramsay, of Hell’s Kitchen fame is famous for going into restaurants and not liking the food and going off and yelling at everyone in the place telling them why their food is such a mess. Well recently, Chef Ramsay stopped by, unannounced, at the super-popular Ortega’s Mexican Bistro, 141 University Ave., and loved the place.

From the table-made guacamole to the enchiladas, chicken mole and Mexican-styled lobster … he even used such words as “brilliant, fantastic, delicious,” and thanked Ortega’s great owners, John and Juan, for such a fabulous meal and cooking.

Big Mike’s dad dies

Two days ago, popular community activist and super personality Big Mike’s dad died peacefully in his sleep in Alabama. His loving dad was in his 90s, and lived a good solid Christian life.

Big Mike got his big heart, compassion and love for community and family from both his parents and our community is a better place because of him. Big Mike, you have all our love and prayers.

  1. Hey Nicole – Here are some thoughts on your comments:

    1. You are absolutely correct. Toni and Chris are talented, committed public servants that stand head and shoulders above a lot of people.

    2. I don’t have to be in their league to make a major contribution to my community.

    3. You apparently have a problem with me, and I have to admit you are beginning to irritate me a little. But we have a MUCH more important thing to be spending our energy on: Getting Bob Filner elected Mayor.

    4. You should know better than to pick a fight with another supporter of Bob Filner, when we ALL need to work together to get Bob Filner elected mayor.

    5. Here is my suggestion: Get your priorities in order. Lay off the snark until we get Bob Filner elected Mayor. Then, if you would like to have another battle of wits, I think I would enjoy that.

  2. Hello,

That’s unfair to compare Linda Perine with Chris Kehoe and Toni Atkins. For one, they have been in the business for many years. They didn’t become as good as they are on day one, it takes practice and hard work.
I like Linda, she is smart and communicates very well, she is a hard worker and I think she would make a wonderful public servant just like Senator Kehoe and Assembly member Atkins, who both have my sincere respect.
That tired old joke “and you are no” put name here, does not fit at all in your paragraph. Try again,

    Thank you,

    Luke Terpstra
    Chair,
    Hillcrest Town Council

  3. Agreed. We have just over 100 days to get Bob Filner elected Mayor of San Diego.

  5. When I first moved to SD, 13 years ago, I couldn’t stand Nicole Murray-Ramirez, while agreed he did some great things I saw him as mean spirited cruel and vindictive. Through my time at the GLT and through friends I’ve gotten to know him and is amazing character and I give him tons of respect. Now I agree he’s mellowed a bit and of course agree with his views on Carl DeMaio, but I gotta call it as i see it and she continues to publicly mistreat someone I greatly admire and has taken a lot of flack from people that didn’t understand the redistricting process or why things were agreed to and armchair quartered back the process. Linda Perine showed me through that her great care for not only the LGBT Community but all of the City of San Diego and gave alot of her time and effort and at at expense to herself but she didn’t care because she believed in the rightness of her cause. I would gladly support her for D3 and I wish Nicole would get to know her before making her baseless claims! Keep on Truckin and Werq It Out Ms Perine!

  6. I don’t know whether or not Linda Perine is going to run for City Council but if she does I will help her get elected. Linda has given a tremendous amount of time and energy to our community. She is so smart and like you incredibly passionate about the LGBT community and Democratic issues. Instead of discouraging and insulting her why not encourage her to continue her great work? There is room for new people at the community table. Our community is and will continue to evolve with new people and their ideas sprinkled in. Allow that change. Encourage it. Embrace it. This is progress!
