New Zealand Prime Minister claimed to be ‘too gay’

John Key

New Zealand news Web site, stuff.co.nz is reporting that Prime Minister John Key is publicly refuting a 20,000-copy leaflet that was distributed by New Zealand‘s Conservative Party to residents of Helensville, proclaiming that Key is “too gay” to represent that district’s electorate.

”We live in a world where equality is pretty important,” said the prime minister, who is the leader of the New Zealand National Party

The aim of the flyers was to martial opposition to a Labour Party bill that would legalize same-sex marriage and adoption.

In an accompanying letter, Conservatives leader Colin Craig quotes one resident saying: ”Colin you should stand here because John Key is too gay for Helensville”.

Key supported the bill‘s first reading and has said he would support the bill‘s passage through Parliament.

Key said there had been ”three or four” calls to his electorate office by voters concerned about his stance but ”nothing spectacular” in response to the leaflets.

Key pointed out that because his wife is an Irish Catholic and he has a Jewish background.he had been forced to marry wife Bronagh outside in a garden.

”(That’s) quite different from a traditional marriage that other people might have traditionally had.”
