Bennington is LGBT-friendliest schoolOnline Only, Bottom Highlights Thursday, September 20th, 2012
So what’s the best campus in America for LGBT students among the nation’s universities? According to Unigo, a company whose Web site claims to the the largest source for information about universities, and which rates college campus experiences by just about any criteria one can imagine, it’s a small liberal arts school known as Bennington College, located in Bennington, Vt.
Originally a “girls school” when it opened in 1932, Bennington went co-ed in 1969 and never looked back. Now, Unigo, working with LGBT Weekly media partner, The Huffington Post, to question 30,000 people nationwide about their college experiences and how that information related to the question, “which is the most LGBT-friendly university in America?”
Picking up the nod for second-best scho0l for LGBTs was New York University. Number three was University of Chicago.
The final outcome of Unigo’s national polling effort comes with some analysis: Bennington’s focus [is] on creating a student body” committed to envisioning and acting towards social change is sure to produce students with the drive and, more importantly, the skills to work towards LGBT equality.
At least one student was less than convinced about the news that Bennington is best in tolerance, acceptance and educational opportunities for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, telling a local Bennington reporter that, if persons were asked about “LG-friendly schools‘ the ranking might be more accurate, but definitely not LGBT.”
To her way of thinking, bisexual students and transgender students still suffer to much alienation, rejection and discrimination at Bennington and most other universities.
