WWE Superstar Darren Young comes out – ‘I’m Gay and I’m happy’ (VIDEO)Breaking News, Online Only, Section 4A, Top Highlights Thursday, August 15th, 2013
WWE superstar Darren Young made history yesterday as the first openly gay wrestler ever at the WWE.
He came out in an interview with TMZ at LAX yesterday. When TMZ asked whether a gay wrestler could succeed in WWE, Darren laughed, saying, “Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay. And I’m happy. I’m very happy.”
Other pro wrestlers have been rumored to be gay, but that remains just rumors.
The 33-year-old said he hopes to pave the way for others struggling with their own coming out process.
“I’m hoping to be able to make a difference,” he told TMZ. “It’s very important to me that people understand that someone’s sexual preference doesn’t really matter. It’s about the person.”
Fellow WWE superstar John Cena and Executive Vice President Stephanie McMahon have since congratulated Young for taking such a brave step.
The WWE says it’s “proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality.”
A rep for the organization adds, “We will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A Star anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.”
