Legendary British singer David Bowie died Jan. 10 at the age of 69. The iconic artist died after a battle with cancer, his rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief,” read a statement posted on the artist’s official social media accounts.

Bowie was a figure in popular music for over four decades, and was known as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s. His androgynous appearance was an iconic element of his image, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s.

Bowie epitomized the 1970s glam rock era with the hit single “Starman” and the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. He released his 25th album, Blackstar, Jan. 8, which was his birthday.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

Bowie is survived by his model wife, Iman, their daughter Alexandria Zahra Jones, and his filmmaker son Duncan Jones, from his first marriage to Mary Angela Bowie
