It’s distressing that the insane political antics in Veep only seem slightly exaggerated in comparison to the horror that is the 2016 presidential campaign. But the jokes in Veep are much better. Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays Selena Meyer, who became president after being vice president for the first several seasons of the show. She, like her aids, colleagues and enemies, has a mouth filthier than any in mainstream comedy. Virtually none of the jokes are printable. But more than being full of words you can’t use in front of children, they are brilliantly linked together with topical, historical and often weird references. Veep is funny in and of itself, but as a tonic for this year’s politics, it’s essential viewing.
