Trump signs the GOP Tax Bill into lawAround the Nation, Breaking News, Top Highlights Friday, December 22nd, 2017
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today President Donald Trump signed the GOP Tax Bill into law, as LGBT advocacy groups denounced the bill as targeting low income and LGBTQ communities.
The legislation was carefully crafted to undermine the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and other vital health care programs. Republican leadership rushed the partisan bill through both chambers of Congress in less than 24 hours and didn’t receive a single vote from Democratic lawmakers.
This bill includes a repeal of the individual mandate, a key component of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which is expected to cause 13 million Americans to lose their insurance coverage.
“Donald Trump just signed legislation attacking access to health care for millions of Americans and threatening the longevity of programs critical to the LGBTQ community,” said HRC Director of Government Affairs, David Stacy. “It is clear that this President is more than willing to sell out the American public for any perceived legislative victory.”
“This scam of a tax bill is a clear and targeted attack on LGBTQ Americans and some of our nation’s most vulnerable communities,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “Trump is allowing his personal hostility for the progress made by former President Obama and his hateful anti-LGBTQ ideology to dictate the health and well-being of the country over the will of the many who vocally rejected this bill.”
