Rally to support open service for transgender military, fed employees, Jan. 14Online Only, Section 4A, Top Highlights Thursday, January 11th, 2018
SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Organizers of a Jan. 14 Rally for Transgender Open Service are looking to spread the word – and the rally – across the nation to show support for transgender service members after landmark court rulings allowed them to begin enlisting Jan. 1.
Department of Defense Federal GLOBE, FEDQ, and the North County LGBTQ Center (Oceanside, California) are jointly sponsoring a rally in San Diego, California, and are looking for others to take up the call and host legal, public, peaceful rallies across the continent.
Additional rallies are already planned for Fresno, California; Virginia; New Jersey; and Canada.
“Our transgender citizens may now serve openly in the U.S. military,” said Lisa Kove, executive director of Department of Defense Federal GLOBE. “Now it’s time to open ours hearts and to these brave Americans. All those willing to serve deserve our gratitude.”
Organizers are looking for more 501c3 sponsors. There is no cost to become a sponsor and non-LGBTQ and international organizations are welcome. The only requirement, Kove says, is support of full equality and open service.
Volunteers and organizers are also needed. Interested parties should visit dodfedglobe.com/contact_us.html and complete the contact form.
The Department of Defense Federal GLOBE is a federally recognized affinity group that advocates for and educates about LGBTQ past and present employees of the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Coast Guard, Public Health Service, and aligned corporations.
FEDQ is a federally recognized affinity group that advocates for and educates about past and present federal employees. North County LGBTQ Center is a proactive organization supporting full equality for all LGBTQ people.
The San Diego rally is scheduled for Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. near The LGBTQ Center and Pride flag off University Drive in Hillcrest.
