So you’ve heard about the whips and chains. You’ve heard about the rope. Well two weekends ago it was brought to San Diego in a larger than life forum, called The Hard Edge.

The Hard Edge is an event for the serious BDSM player. There is everything from A to Z. This year the A to Z forum, presented by San Diego’s own, boy Brian and another young lady outlined all the fetishes and kinks under the sun. There was also a scene set at a prayer booth, with a real priest and a portrayal of a mom from the ‘50s, who had committed all the cardinal sins. Mom was absolved of her sins through floggers, single tales, humiliation and the administration of more pain. These and a few more scenes like body punching and mummification were all part of the weekend. The crowd of about 150 attendees ended the weekend with a cigar social.

Keep your ear to the ground for next years Hard Edge. Proceeds go toward the building of the Leather Realm, an educational forum during San Diego Pride. Christie, Annie, Bean Stalk and the Leather Pride committee members spearhead the Leather Realm and The Hard Edge.

Fetishmen of San Diego Men’s Discussion Group

This year’s Imperial Court de San Diego’s Coronation XL, from what I have heard, can be expected to feature the leather contingent out in full force. I won’t say any more about that until I get an official word. Still, I’m confident it will be worth your while to go if you’re interested in leather. This year marks Imperial Court’s 40th coronation, and somehow that means the event is synonymous with “Red Ruby.” Get your popcorn and mark your calendars; the coronation is Feb. 11.

Next on the agenda is the Mr. San Diego Eagle Contest, which will be held Feb. 18 at the San Diego Eagle. But prior to that, the ever popular “Cocktail with the Stars” will feature a true legend and a top performer, Kieron Ryan, who has worked with an array of media companies with Raging Stallion his latest. You’ve seen all of him, but probably don’t know his name. Yours truly will interview him up close and personal at the San Diego Eagle, Feb. 4. Come ready to ask your own questions of Kieron.

Just in case you’re new to San Diego, or to the leather scene, I am going to recap a few things that happen. These are the places you want to be. First to start your month off, you don’t want to miss the Bear Dance at Numbers, the first Saturday night of each month. It’s a great time and I started off my New Year there. Expect me, and all the handsome regulars every first Saturday. If you’re having a rough week and want to start your weekend early; check out the San Diego Eagle Thursday night. You can catch some of those out-of-town business-folk before they leave Friday morning. Show your San Diego hospitality. We are a tourist town!

Speaking of Friday, when you’re looking for a happy hour, I have a deal for you. Try Numbers at 4 p.m. and check out Lenny spinning records from the ’70s, ’80s, and some from years hence. They also have burgers, hotdogs and salad on the back patio.

The leather community has always prided itself on “education,” and the San Diego leather community is no different. They meet at Pleasures and Treasures at 2525 University Avenue on the first and third Wednesday of every month from 7 to 9 p.m.

The 5th Annual Inter-Club Holiday Party was put on by groups such as SDLOG, ClubX, Fetishmen SD, Puppy Patrol, Next Gen, Leather Realm, Hard Edge and the Sisters to name a few. These groups had decided to pull together and have one giant party instead of 20 little ones. Boy Bryan (American Leatherboy 2010) was the organizer. The event was first held at Pecs Bar, but over the years it outgrew the space. There were lots of holiday treats and goodies. There was no program, no agenda, just mixing and mingling, and of course photos with Santa.

After making my appearance at the Inter-Club Holiday Party, I journeyed down University Avenue to Pleasures and Treasures (P&T). If you have not been to P&T’s art gallery and meeting space upstairs, you might want to check it out. Right about now it’s donned with a Tom of Finland erotic art display.

Tom’s art is being preserved through the Foundation at the 3,500 square foot Tom of Finland house in Los Angeles. The art will be on display at P&T until Dec. 23.

Belt is an event that took place at Eden last Thursday, was produced by Glitz Glam, Anthony and a host of friends and leather family. Take a look at the photos and imagine if you were there. I think I heard them say it might be a quarterly event.

Robert Rodriguez and the leather community along with the Imperial Court are having a toy drive starting Monday, Dec. 19, culminating Friday, Dec. 23 10 p.m, at the San Diego Eagle. Toys for children 12 and under can be dropped off at the Eagle all week. It will be to support 27 families. For more info contact Robert at 619-817-9926.

Jesse Greika

You’ve seen them. You’ve heard about them. But if you haven’t, how could you miss them – female impersonators, drag queens and performers. Yes, performers. They are more than guys who dress in women’s clothes; they do a lot of things. I’ve got the inside scoop – up close and personal with Glitz Glam aka Jesse Greika, a young man who not only dresses the part, but does it with perfection and purpose. Hold on to your wigs and read on.

Jesse grew up in a traditional home in Rockville Ky. with an older brother and a neighborhood full of extended family members. In 1993, he packed his nap sack and set out to discover a more diverse world in Florida. And as you might guess, it started on Halloween. It was his first time he dressed in drag and worked the door and danced at a club called Electra. He then went on a Canadian tour with a European recording artist, with whom he made a music video. It was during this growth period that Glitz Glam got her foundation, her base. No pun intended.

Glitz Glam is not only a performer, but a way of thinking, feeling and acting – a professional. Jesse says that “Glitz Glam allows him to focus on the inner creativity.” Glitz’s focus is on doing good things for life and mankind. The “Glitz Glam philosophy” transforms him from Jesse into Glitz Glam, which is never the same persona twice. Jesse says that transforming into Glitz Glam means breaking the mold, not just filling the cup. It’s also empowering, yet inspiring to those who see and meet her, inspiring them to be whomever and whatever they want to be. The make-up brush when placed in her hands sparks that inner creativity and she becomes the canvas. It doesn’t matter how young or how old you are. Your ethnicity, your heritage has no bearing on your transformation – dare to be different.

Glitz Glam

Glitz’s inspiration comes from within, but support always gives her the extra edge. And Jesse gets that from his partner of eight years, Anthony Rollar. The Rollar-Greika family is one of dynamic community involvement and accomplishments. Anthony, Mr. San Diego Leather 2010, aspired to compete for International Mr. Leather (IML). He not only competed, but was the 2nd runner-up, with Jesse and Glitz Glam standing in the wings supporting him all the way. When I first met them, Anthony was proud to say how he would walk arm and arm with Glitz wearing six inch heels and dressed to the nines. They support each other and have come together to put on the Annual Turkey Meatball Dinner to raise money for Mama’s Kitchen. Anthony organizes the dinner, and Glitz puts on the show. Don’t miss next year at The Center.

I asked Glitz about some of her high profile moments, and she stated that one in particular was when she recorded a video with Toni Bonjovi. She also organized Tantrums and Tiara’s – a benefit that netted $55,000 for Mama’s Kitchen. And the momentum continues; Glitz is partnering up with Eden in Hillcrest to put on Belt, a new fetish event that will cross-pollinate and bring together the knowledgeable with the not-so-knowledgeable of the BDSM, fetish and kink community. There will be demos and scenes. And for those willing to explore that side of themselves, hands-on experiences. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt. You can actually get the chance to meet some of the men and women from the leather community like Anthony and Miles, California Leather Sir 2010. You can check out this event Dec. 8 at Eden. I must say, that my interview with Glitz Glam, a true class act was nothing short of professional. As you’ve read, it was focused, and with purpose. So I asked Glitz, who did she look up to, and she mentioned that to her Chad Michaels does the best performance of Cher that he has ever scene. I have witnessed several of Glitz’s performances, and one of the most notable to me was at the 2011 California Leather Sir/boy/bootblack and puppy contest held at Queen Bees last summer. It was a stellar performance. Glitz is very detailed oriented. And if you haven’t seen her perform, you should be at Eden.

Glitz Glam is now a part of San Diego history and is paving the way as those who have come before her; like a certain Diana Ross (Empress Norman) performer from years past. If I attempted to name them all then we would have to write an entire column on just the drag queens/performers. Interview of Dayton O’Connor at Eagle’s Cocktails with the Stars

San Diego recently played host to Bears San Diego, which presented BearQuake 2011. And this year’s theme was “Bearlesque!” The weekend kicked off with a social, a snack, a few sips and “Bearaoke” at the Redwing, Pecs and Baja Betty’s. Throughout the event, I noticed that there was a high level of support for local community organizations such as the Imperial Court de San Diego, which itself has and continues to provide innumerable grants, funds, volunteer hours and organizing efforts to countless numbers of people, groups and charitable causes.

Friday night there was standing room only inside Pecs. Members of the bar staff were very busy. The weekend was getting off to a great start. It was so busy a line to get into Pecs formed outside. Yes, “The Bears” had descended on San Diego in packs! The contest was supported by a cast of community and national sponsors such as Redwing, BarenJaeger/Jaegermeister, Brian’s American Eatery, Baja Betty’s, CCBC Resort of Cathedral City and Pleasures and Treasures to name a few. BarenJager/Jaegermeister even had a real bear mascot. There were members selling shots to benefit this year’s chosen charity; Special Delivery, an organization that feeds members of the community affected by HIV and AIDS.

Tough Bears, Sissy Bears, Bears from round the block. Muscle Bears, Teddy Bears, even Bears who like to shop. The Bears we love to love.

Last weekend, San Diego played host to Bears as San Diego presented BearQuake 2011. Nicole Murray Ramirez, The Emperor Alan, Ashley O’Day and others all played integral parts in helping Jeff Breeze; who by the way is the current membership and social chairman of Bears San Diego, was a judge, and recipient of the Board of Directors Award. The other judges were San Diego Mr. Leather 2011, Kirk Wendelborg; a very handsome Terry Leftgoff; Mr. So Cal Bear/cub 2011 of L.A, and to round out the judging panel with a little bit of flare was the last judge, but certainly not least, Sister Kali Vagilistic X.P. Aladocious of the The Asylum of the Tortured Heart of San Diego.

The contestants were down on their knees all night selling raffle tickets to help raise donations for Special Delivery. Those who didn’t want to stand in line at Pecs spilled over into the San Diego Eagle, which promoted a festive environment. All I have to say is there were a lot shots floating around; ironically, they were Jaeger shots. That night all the bars closed down with the crowds being ushered out the door. That was okay because the next day, what would a Bear weekend be without a pool party… It was a “private” party, of course with donations going to the weekend’s charity Special Delivery. And of course there was food. It just would not be right to have a Bear party without food and beverage. I snapped a view photos, but I had to make sure I aimed my camera lens up. Needless to say the pool was filled with those frisky, furry friends of mine, “Da Bears.” A good time was had by all. I took along a few guests who were pleasantly surprised. The Bears lounged around for most of the afternoon and then poured themselves out into the shuttle and headed back to the Lafayette Hotel, home of Bear Quake.

Our MC, Ms. Roxy Bleau graced the crowd as she always does with wit and tit. But it was the Bears that we came to see. Rich’s was filled with about 150 Bears and Bear lovers. The winners of this contest have an option to go on and run for Texas Bear Round-up (TBRU) held in Dallas, International Mr. Leather (IML), or Bear Pride which is held during the same weekend in Chicago as IML. Bears San Diego started back in 1994. Bear Quake is combination of the Bears San Diego and Bears Los Angeles which why the title is Mr. So Cal Bear/Cub.

To get things started, Sister Nora Torious bestowed a blessing upon the contest, then she performed an opening Bearlesque number with Mark Flores, Mike Ferguson, Bill Fike and Jovani Martinez; all donned in top hats. The audience was also entertained by very unique group called Studio Revolution, made up of Travis Spackman, Jesse De La Cruz, Cheetah Platt and Tom Wall. They performed a combination of dance, Zumba, yoga and aerial yoga. They performed six times that evening; at the contest and during the L.L. Bear Dance. One of dancers was very hot, but not because he danced with fire, but he did… He was warm to the touch.

Once we got past the technical difficulties, the show went on non-stop from there. But I’m sure the folks who were running late were glad there was a delay in the program. If not for the technical difficulties, those late comers would have missed a very entertaining contest. During these brief moments, Roxy’s dialogue turned educational. She gave the definition of burlesque, and then gave a few examples like Beth Midler and the likes. Her goal was to trigger some memories in those of us who knew who Beth Midler is, but instead, she was met with a few blank stares. That’s because, the bears are getting younger, and yet just as handsome as those who has paved the way for them. I was glad to see the youngsters in the crowd. If they didn’t get anything physical to take home on Saturday night, they received some gay man’s knowledge from not only an entertainer, but an educator. That’s my Roxy.

The three handsome contestants were, Esteban Nunez of LA; Dave Bendixen of San Diego; and Ron Brundige of Temecula. After their introductions the contestants returned to entertain us with their fantasies. The ranged from, the hot neighbor who locked himself and knocked on Esteban’s door and asked if he could shower, to Dave’s fantasizing about being manhandled by trucker, then on to Ron who performed to a hot tune called “Knight in Black Leather.” Then he had a wardrobe malfunction, but he held on to it.

Charity begins at home. And Bears San Diego worked hard. Their efforts were obviously aimed at giving back to the community. Marvin from Special Delivery received a donation, and the Trevor Project, whose goal is to end suicide among Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender (LGBT) youth by providing life-saving and life-affirming resources nationwide will also receive a donation. To benchmark on the Trevor Project a video was shown with a culmination of community members and leaders reaffirming today’s gay youth that, “It does get better.”

At time the question arises, why have a contest? Why do groups like the Sisters, Imperial Court; Leather, Levi and Bear groups have these events? Most of time it’s for charity; to take care of members in the LGBT community, not just to have a contest. The contest is to entertain the audience while a more worthwhile cause is running the background. These events also provide a place for the young men and women to meet other like-minded individuals. I spoke with a young Bear this weekend at the pool party. He said he heard about Bear Quake and decided that at ripe age of 24 it was time for him to step away from the wall and blossom into whatever flower he’ll become. This was his first Bear event, and he was having a great time. He actually went up to someone, introduced himself, and now he has a date. Go forth and prosper young bear. It’s because of organizations like The Trevor Project that he and others like him will grow and become the leaders of tomorrow; tackling new challenges.

Speaking of challenges, the Bears awarded Nick, Manager of Rich’s, the Jerry Colinard Memorial Award. Nick throughout the evening was faced with challenges, and tackled each with a zealous attack. He single-handedly hung a new screen on stage during the contest so that we could all watch The Trevor Project videos. This just a one night glimpse of what Nick has been doing for the community all the time. He deserves the award.

After the break and the silent auctions closed, it was time to announce the winners. Roxy returned in a stunning, very beautiful shinny blue gown. The Bears San Diego Board of Directors addressed the audience and was on hand to announce Mr. Ron Brundige as Mr. So Cal Bear 2011, and Dave Bendixen as So Cal Cub 2011.

There were a number of folks working behind the scene, but I do remember seeing some names that I have not mentioned like Donald Riggs, and Jeff Rosenfeld. I remember them because I saw them all weekend. I look forward to attending Bear Quake 2012, and so should you.

“Ruff” or cute, RubberDawg hoods run the gamut.

Let’s talk about gear. Dawg gear, and then some! When visiting the San Diego Eagle or most leather bars across the world, you might have had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of a puppy, wolf or perhaps a pig bought you a drink. Well, we all know that kinda pig. But this one, looks like an actual pig. Yes, with ears and the nose! Some of you are asking why? It’s a fetish! Continue reading, open your mind and by the time you’re done consider this an education.

Let’s start at the beginning. Scott Moats, a long time resident of San Diego, got his start as a custom window displayer, and one weekend in Palm Springs transitioned into Rubberdawg. His passion for making props and molds out of latex to create mass skulls, gargoyles and monsters led him to become the owner of Rubberdawg.com, a hood, glove and paw artist. They are not masks, but hoods that fit over the entire head and neck, and zip in the back. Clients measure their head and neck and then send the measurements in so that he can make a custom fitted hood that fits snug and gives an almost painted-on look. The hoods are fully functional. You can see, breath through the nostrils, and consume whatever you desire. I tried on a dog hood and paws, and found it to be quite comfortable. Scott defines his hoods as fetish wear or personalized gear. Why fetish? It takes all kinds to make the world go around. He ships the hoods out to pretty much every country; Australia being the farthest place and home to his best clients.

Some clients send in photos of their pets to have a custom hood made to look like Fido!

Another big fetish community are the furries; folks who dress up like animals. They are called mascots. They come in lots of exotic colors. Furries seek out Rubberdawg to help get them ready to attend “Furry” conventions; mostly on the East Coast. Maybe that’s an East Coast thing because of the cooler weather, which will allow one to dress as and go out looking like a polar bear. You can also find furries at International Mr. Leather in Chicago. Although Halloween is coming up, Rubberdawg’s busiest time of the year runs from September through January. He says it never slows down. It takes eight days to make one hood, but he produces seven at a time; sculpting and creating molds out of clay; mixing colors; and applying 43 coats of liquid latex to each hood. The ears go on last. Although this has nothing to do with Easter, Scott says “rabbits,” are becoming very popular. Mmmm … how apropos, “rabbits” for a fetish community. I know what you’re thinking, and you’re probably right – like a rabbit. You can even be a Dalmatian, if you like. One of his most unique requests was for a dragon wolf hood, with horns. If you’ve ever seen a movie called Waldo the Dog, the character Waldo is wearing a dog hood. You can also get an up close and personal look at Rubberdawg’s craft at Mankind in San Diego, RoughTrade and 665 in L.A., or ToughStuff Leather in Phoenix.

The hoods aren’t for everyone, especially if you have an allergy to latex. Don’t do it! Others have been known to wear their hoods continuously; for an entire week. You do need to take it off and wash your face from time to time; good hygiene. His clientele is 90 percent male, but there is a 10 percent chance you will find a woman behind the hood!

I asked Scott what’s coming up in the fall fashion of hoods. Well if you don’t have them, these will be a “must have;” tails, feet and muzzle hoods that will allow more of the face to breath, and where your facial expressions can be seen. And get this, “Rub-bot” hoods, ones that make you look like a robot. They will all be made out of rubber. If you want to hang out with other like minded pups, wolves, pigs, cats, tigers, lions and even cheetahs stop by the San Diego Eagle on any given night. I like Thursday through Sundays myself, and you will be welcomed with open paws. Meet some local pups like Britt, a stray, and bartender, Beep, also at Mankind, or Slut Pup Chris, California Leather Pup 2011, then there is Gmork, a long haired adorable pup. How many years have you been making RubberDawg hoods?

I have been doing it for about six years.

How long does it take to make one hood?

If I am making just one, it takes about seven to eight days. There is a bit of drying time, but I can make seven in one week. That is the optimum number of hoods, working constantly, coating one, while others are either waiting to “level” or drying. It takes 2 days just to put on the zipper.

How many orders do you get a month?

That’s hard to say. It changes every month.  It’s getting more and more every month. As soon as I ship one out, I get another order. The most I have been backed up is 30.

What is your favorite and least favorite part about making hoods?

My favorite part is coming up with new designs. Least favorite is being overwhelmed with so many orders I feel like I’m drowning.

How and why did you decide to get into hood making?

It all started when I went to a rubber party in Palm Springs. They said that they were going to have a “Puppy Play Area.” I thought that would be fun. (I dabbled in puppy play before.) I saw what was out there, hood-wise and most of the leather hoods looked like monkeys to me. I figured I could make me one. I have been working with liquid latex and molds for years. I made one and it was OK. I still had a little time so I made another, and it was better. I still had time so I made a third. I took all three to the party and people went ballistic over them. Thorn of Instigator Magazine was there. He backed me up against the refrigerator and said “You have to sell these, I’ll help you..” Over the next few months I cleaned up the designs and made them with zippers. The first ones you just pulled over your head. It was OK putting it on, but hard to take off. My lover and I planned a trip to Europe and Thorn set up an appointment with the buyer for Mr. B’s of Amsterdam. I showed them what I had and they ordered 25. That is what really started it all. From there it has just gotten bigger and bigger. Rubberdawg is all I do. Seven days a week, 10-12 hours a day.

What does puppy play mean to you?

I have a “social” idea of why it’s getting so popular. We have lost a lot of our leather community and many of the next generation has not had the opportunity to be shown what it is to be part of the leather community and had to kind of fend for themselves.

Puppy play is filling that void, it still has the dominant and submissive aspect, but the “Rules” are not strict. There is a freedom and a true “Play” aspect to it.

What it means to me. I just enjoy it.

What was the first hood you ever made?

What breed it was, I have no idea. I look at it now and I think, “Damn, that’s horrible.” Now if you talking about just masks, I’ll have to think about that. I have made a ton of them way back in junior high. I think it was an abominable snowman.

How did you come up with the name RubberDawg?

A friend of mine came up with that, I said “Rubberdog” and he suggested “Rubberdawg”

What is your favorite fetish event to attend and why?

Rubber! I love going up to San Francisco for Dore Alley and Folsom.

When you’re not making hoods, what hobbies do you enjoy doing?

LOL. I guess coming up with more and different items  It’s all I do and what seems like all the time.

What other products do you make other than hoods?

I am working on paws (for walking on all fours), gloves (that have thumbs) and mitts (that have no thumbs). I am slowly working on paws for the feet. It takes time to work out the bugs and  sizing is always the hard thing to deal with. The muzzles are new and still not on the Web site. I am hoping before the year is out to have the Web site completely redone, making it easier to add new items and new photos in the galleries.

Tom Dickerson, Mr. San Diego Leather 2002 and longtime supporter of the San Diego LGBT community contacted me so that I might share with you, the leather community, news that the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee will vote on and select 25 commemorative stamps this coming quarter.

His goal is for the leather community to support the selection of a stamp in honor of Harvey Milk.

Harvey was part of a ground breaking election in 1978. He became one of the world’s first openly gay elected officials. Unfortunately, he only served less than a year in public office before he was brutally assassinated.

Recently, the Human Rights Commission of San Diego sent a proposal (sponsored by 51st District Rep. Bob Filner, City Council President Kevin Faulconer and Nicole Murray-Ramirez) to the Citizen’s Stamp Advisory Committee recommending the creation and issuance of a “Harvey Milk commemorative” U.S. postage stamp.

Dickerson is asking for our community as a whole to inundate the Citizen’s Stamp Advisory office with thousands of requests to approve the Harvey Milk commemorative stamp. The board is comprised of 12 members appointed by the postmaster general. The committee meets quarterly in Washington, D.C. to review these proposals. So now is the time to start writing those letters. Be a part of your history as a member of the LGBT community. This is where that pride comes in that we celebrated a few months back.

Now on to what’s happening in San Diego! Bears San Diego proudly presents “BearQuake 2011 – Bearlesque” Oct. 13-16, 2011 in beautiful sunny San Diego. The event will be hosted at the historical Lafayette Hotel and Swim Club in North Park. It’ll be a fun weekend that will kick off with a dinner and bar night with drink specials at the Redwing Thursday evening Oct. 13. If you can’t make it Thursday, come out and meet the contestants at the Meet and Greet at Pecs Bar on Friday, Oct. 14. On Saturday there will be a lot happening starting with a private barbecue and pool party at the hotel from noon to 4 p.m. Afterwards, stop in at Rich’s for the VIP reception and then the Mr. Southern California Bear/cub contest and show with Aerial Revolution, followed by the ever so popular “LLBear/BearQuake” dance. On Sunday there will be a brunch and bingo with the Sisters at Mo’s. To polish off the weekend, join the bears for the Victory Celebration at the Hole from 4 to 8 p.m., followed by a farewell dinner at Brian’s. This event promises to be frisky, friendly and fun! At this time, I would like to commend boy Bryan, American Leather boy 2011 on a job well done during his title year. Bryan was Mr. San Diego Leather 2010, and like so many San Diego titleholders went on to represent an international title. If you are in the mood to travel, go to Chicago and show your support for Bryan at the American Brotherhood weekend being held Oct. 7-9, 2011. I’m sure there will be a few San Diegans in the audience because we travel well.

On a more personal note, I would like to thank all of you for your emails regarding my journey into the leather community. I received some very nice comments, emails and texts from members of the entire LGBT community. I would also like to thank a very special couple for sharing with me their encounter on how, “It Started at the Gym!” I am sure there are a lot more real life stories out there. Thank you for your stories! They were very heartfelt and warm.

In my last column I asked if anyone had a story about their personal life that they would like to share. I also stated that I would print it in the column. Here it is.

“I was in my late 20s and I too came from the country, in a mid-western town. I was a jock in high school, so I’ve always worked out and stayed in good shape. I noticed other guys in the shower during my high school and college sports. I caught a glimpse of others looking at me and I stole a few glances myself. In college I was surrounded by other physically fit guys. At that age, it was very common to become somewhat aroused in the shower and I think since we all were in the same boat, no one said anything. I graduated with a degree in business management and landed a job here in San Diego. One of my first priorities was to find a good gym; so I started shopping around. I found a gym with a running track inside, so I figured I could get some cardio in and then hit the weight room after warming up so I could stay in shape. Although the gym had a steam room, I didn’t have time because I was working out at lunch. So afterwards, I would take a quick shower and head back to the office.

One day, I got very busy with a project at the office and I missed my lunch time workout, so I decided I would go after work and still get my workout in. I was surprised at the number of folks who worked out in the evening. I changed, headed for the track for a run and then to the workout area. I found that I could take my time, so I had a really good workout. As I headed for the shower, I decided to take a quick rinse stop in the steam room to relax my aching muscles. To my surprise, I couldn’t see very much, but I noticed that some of the men sat very close to each other, but I didn’t think anything of it. I sat down on the bench and my leg rubbed the guy next to me and I apologized. He said, “No problem!” Mmm … I thought to myself and continued to feel the heat of the steam as it relaxed my aching body; it felt good. I accidentally brushed his leg again as I adjusted my towel, and I apologized again. This time, he touched my leg and said, “It’s OK!”

Afterwards, as I showered I noticed out of the corner of my eye that someone was looking at me. It was him, he was in great shape. I noticed that he had broad shoulders and nice abs. He caught me looking back. I stepped out to dry off, went to the lockers, and as everyone knows how it works in the gym, there can be only two people in the gym and 50 lockers and your locker will always be right next to each other. There he was, standing next to me. Then he asked me the gym question, “You have a good workout?” I replied that I normally worked out at lunch, but I got busy in the office, so I had to work out that evening. We looked into each other’s eyes and it was then I knew I wanted to get to know him. I got dressed and told him that maybe I would see him around.

Fast forward a week later, Friday night; I was out walking in my neighborhood after grabbing a quick bite to eat. I looked up and there he was, walking toward me. We stopped, acknowledged each other and he asked me if I wanted to grab a beer. I said, “Sure!” He said there is a place right around the corner where we could grab a beer and shoot a game of pool. That sounded good to me. We walked into a bar called Shooters, and there were about three or four pool tables with guys shooting pool. We ordered a couple of beers and then realized we would have to wait for a table. That gave us a chance to talk. It was then that we discovered we had similar backgrounds. He too was a jock, and had moved to San Diego from Oklahoma after college. I kind of suspected he was gay, but for some reason, that didn’t matter. He was a great guy. We shot a few games of pool, had a few more beers, then left the bar and went our separate ways. I couldn’t wait to meet up with him at the gym next week.

The next week, I changed my workout schedule to after work. For four days I went to work out, looked around for him and he was not there. Then on Thursday night, on my way to my car, he stopped me in the parking lot and told me that he had gone out of town on business and arrived back in town that afternoon. He asked me if we could start training together. I agreed. We met every day at 5:30; worked out, hit the steam room, sat next to each other, legs touching. Then one evening as we left the gym, he put his hand on my shoulder and asked me to stop by his place. I agreed. I followed him and discovered he only lived a block away from me. We went in and watched football films from his college days. We had a few drinks, talked, laughed and then we looked into each other’s eyes. Shooter’s is now closed; it’s now True North. Wolf’s bar is closed; it’s the Blue Foot.

Fast forward, it’s been 15 years now, and we’re looking into each other’s eyes the same way we did that first evening, ‘at the gym!’”

I’ve been writing this column now for about four months, and I think it’s about time for me to tell you how I got here – the Reader’s Digest version!

Well, I was born a poor black child … no, that’s not it! I was raised on the streets of … no that’s not it either! I’m a country boy from Texas. And that you best believe!

I come from an upper middle-class African American family. It wasn’t always that way. My grandparents had 10 children, so my mother knew what it was like to work. And she passed that work ethic on to me. I am the middle child. For what it’s worth, I’m not the typical stereotype in a lot of ways.

I was a civil rights kid. I dined with the likes of the late Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King when I was a junior member of the NAACP of Texas. I grew up loving music, and starred in a few local plays. One notable role was as the Tin Man in our rendition of The Wiz! I got the part naturally because I was a self-taught tap dancer, and the only one in my town who came close to the original performance.

But as the stereotype goes, you could say I was into theater. I worked as a radio DJ while in high school. So, you could say that I was an entertainer as well.

Now in the country, in a small town it’s hard to be sheltered by life outside of your environment. Well back then at least; communications weren’t as prevalent. So you could say that I was “Ghetto Fabulous!” That means I was a star in my own environment. My preparation for college was just as dramatic. I was my class favorite and I received a drama scholarship to attend a junior college, but I decided to join the military. I wanted to see the world and get out of that small town.

The Armed Forces took me to Germany. There I explored my first gay bar and backroom scenes at the age of 18. I was young and handsome, and there again, I was, “Ghetto Fabulous,” with lots and lots of friends; American, German, French, you name it! Ironically, I was taken there by another military member, whose gaydar went off and who told me, “I have a place that I know you will like!”

And now, I’m writing a column in the San Diego LGBT Weekly. At that time, I was not ready to own and face the fact that I was a gay man. I was just spreading my wild oats, as I thought. So I went back home and married one of my high school sweethearts.

That lasted about a year and a half and then I went out to explore. This is now called on the “DL” (down low). It means you don’t think everyone knows that you are gay, but they do and just won’t say! I did that for a while and because of my upbringing just could not bring myself to believe that such a thing existed; two men as a couple? How could that be?

So guess what? I got married again. This time I told myself that was how it was supposed to be and no matter what I was going to keep it that way. But life is a funny thing. Just because I was telling myself to believe that way, it does not mean that the other person you marry thinks it’s going to last forever. That’s when I started writing my fairy tales. It can happen, but only when both parties are involved.

Needless to say that did not last either, but it went on for a few years. There were the children that kept the happiness, but the relationship was not doing either of us any justice. So I moved to North Park and decided to find out who I was.

It felt like Germany, all over again. I was popular, even more handsome as a man than a young boy. And then again, I made more and more friends; some who now I call family.

I came out to my children and the love response I received was, “You’ve always been our dad, nothing can stop that now!”

Wow! That was great, but I had a few more folks to come out to. So I took my new found boyfriend, first one ever, to meet my family in Texas. Now granted, you heard me say that I am African American, but I did not tell you that I am also a percentage of Cherokee Indian. What a perfect combination to hate a white man. My new, first boyfriend was a white man.

We went home to Texas, and I was floored when my mother talked to me in the kitchen and gave me another lovely response, “Baby, you can’t help who you fall in love with!”

That was all I needed; the positive response from mom! Now I know it doesn’t happen all the time, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Well of course there is my sister, who said, “Oh! I knew that!” My inner thoughts said I wish someone would have told me!

Life is great now. I am on my last boyfriend. I’m relationship material, always have been. I like the party atmosphere, but I also like my quiet time with my family and friends. I’ve done a lot of things, seen a lot of places and going to see more.

Eros, God of Love

Over the past few months, I’ve reported on and written about various events, contests and festivals. I have really been impressed by the display of all the leather arts, crafts and history behind it.

As most of us were, I was exposed to the naked human body through paper pornography. It was used for its intended purpose! It wasn’t until after I became a young man that I was able to see the sensuality and eroticism of art of the human body. I discovered the curves and contours, and the facial expressions of the models. I really discovered the beauty when I came across the pencil drawings of Tom of Finland and the oil paintings of beautiful men and women.

Today the erotic arts come in so many forms. And I have been honored by those who have shared their talents with me, for my enjoyment and my adornment. During the Mr. and Mrs. San Diego Leather Pride weekend, I was at both contests and I took the opportunity to look at some of the silent auction items. There I found art work in the form of paintings, drawings, books and stained glass. Yes, stained glass!

Dennis Wymbs, one of the San Diego and California communities’ most famed artists has unique talents. His art work can come in the form of stained glass, leather masks and copper etching images. He can take a photo of you and etch it into a sheet of copper, frame it and immortalize you forever. Dennis can also take images that you provide and work them into a collage of stained glass that brings your image to light; especially when the sun hits it. He has done stained glass pieces for a lot of clubs and organizations; the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and the Ms. San Diego contest to name a few. I have a few pieces of his hanging in my home, and in my closet! If you want to see Dennis’s work, go to his Web site at erosgallery.net. Dennis is also having an artist reception, where his work will be on display at Pleasures and Treasures, 2525 University Ave. on Aug. 12, 5-8 p.m. I can promise you that Dennis will have something to stir up your loins!

And if it’s your desire to be a more beastly guy or girl, San Diego also has an artist who can help transform you into that puppy, that wolf or that pig that lives inside you. Scotty makes rubber molds, constructs them into masks to resemble the puppy or beast you want to become. You don’t have to wish you were hooking up with the werewolf on True Blood. So you want to know how you could learn more about leather arts and culture. Well believe it or not, there is a museum! The Leather Archives and Museum is located in Chicago, Ill. Go to leatherarchives.org for a detailed history of the leather community.

San Diego has its very own leather history project, which was prominently displayed at the Leather Realm during the recent San Diego Gay Pride. The San Diego Leather History project is curated by caryl of Club-X; pansexual leather, BDSM fetish group. Club-X provides workshops to educate its members and those who want to learn more.

In the recent past, San Diegans had a few establishments where you could go and have custom made leather gear. To give them honorable mention for their past service to the San Diego community, I will mention a few names that should jog a few memories; Moose Leather, Macleo Leather and Ringold Alley. Now we have Pleasures and Treasures; another family owned and operated establishment.

Speaking of family, it was great to see a lot of you come out and support the Gay Men’s Chorus Concert GuyTunes, last weekend! “Snap Snap, Second Verse,” you had to be there! And the cast after-party at True North, let’s say, it was very “lyrical!” They have a calendar on sale to help with travel funds. And one month features the “leathermen of the chorus,” standing in front of the San Diego Eagle dressed in leather.

The San Diego leather community is evolving into one of the premier communities within the U.S. There has been a lot of attention on us lately and I think it’s about time that we recognize ourselves. Wow, what a showing!

Not only have we managed to capture the attention of the world with the pride of our military community, we have also managed to bring attention to what’s going on in San Diego. During San Diego’s Leather Pride in March, San Diego received honorable mention and a vast amount of accolades in the Leather Journal, a worldwide leather publication. That sparked the interest of a lot of out-of-towners, who then descended on San Diego to attend the 2012 California Leather Sir/boy Contest in June. Then in July, we stepped it up with the Leather Realm’s “Back Alley” at San Diego Pride. It was filled with a plethora of education, instruction, history and all the information that you would need to get started on your leather journey.

“Journey” is a catchword in the leather community. Everyone who started down the leather path feels compelled to tell the world what a journey it has been. A journey filled with experiences that each man and woman in the leather community can only explain because each one is unique.

Why? The leather community is very unique! Unique in such a way, that everyone has a kink or a fetish that they discover, and then realize that there are others who share the same. Yes, kinky birds of a feather do flock together.

And it was evident at this year’s San Diego Pride. We were honored to have in our presence Mama Sandy Reinhardt of San Francisco, owner/editor of the Leather Journal Dave Rhodes, American Leatherman Louie, Mr. Long Beach Leather Ian, California Leather Sir Sam, California Leather boy zack, Mr. San Diego Leather 2011 Kurt, Ms. San Diego 2011 Beanstalk and of course Mr. San Diego Leather 2010 Anthony Rollar, who was also second runner-up 2010 of International Mr. Leather, just to name a few of California’s finest.

I know for sure that on Saturday the San Diego Leather Realm “Back Alley” at the Pride Festival had more than 7,000 guests. I witnessed men and women receiving instruction on flogging and other BSDM techniques. It was done in very good taste, not to scare the general public and I know for sure it piqued a few curiosities.

It was a great production, but I must say I was very disappointed to learn that someone entered the Leather Realm on Saturday night and vandalized the area. You know what happened after that? The San Diego community did what we do: we banded together, cleaned up the place, and vowed that the education must go on! Talk about making lemons into lemonade.

That’s why I am proud to be a member of the San Diego leather community. We put in a lot of time, a lot of caring and a lot of understanding to make this a great place!

It was great seeing a lot of you while I marched in the parade with the leather contingent. A lot of you knew me, and those that didn’t I was glad to meet you.

Next weekend, a few of us will travel up to Los Angeles to attend the Pantheon of Leather Awards and the Mr. and Ms. Olympus contest, sponsored by the Leather Journal. Each year, members of the leather community are nominated and recognized for their contributions to the leather community and the LGBT community as a whole. I had the honor of being nominated for the Southern California region one year. The event is Aug. 5-7.

The events in San Diego will slow down a bit this time of year because it’s vacation time. I told you before that San Diegans travel in packs. Quite a few folks will be going to Dore Alley this weekend in San Francisco. I’ll be in town, checking out the Gay Men’s Chorus production, Guy Tunes!

You can find a lot to do here in “America’s Finest City!” Stop in at Pecs on any given night and hang out with the Bears on Wednesday night. If you’re feeling a little bit more animalistic, check out the Puppies at the Eagle, also on Wednesday night! Say “Hi” to Britt behind the bar! Thursday is yellow hanky night at the Eagle. Need I say more?

On Friday evening Aug. 5 it’s the fifth annual swap meet at the Joyce Beers Center in Hillcrest, sponsored by Club-X and San Diego League of Gentleman (SDLOG).

After you lunch on Saturday afternoon, join California Leather Sir 2010 Sir Miles for a cigar social in the upstairs lounge at Bourbon St., starting at 3 p.m. And to round Saturday out, at 9 p.m., head up Park Avenue to Numbers for the Bear Dance.

These are a few things you definitely don’t want to miss. Bring a friend or one of those out-of-towners you met on Friday night that came to San Diego to see what’s going on.

Todd Bishop, 2011 California Leather Sir of Palms Springs

San Diego Pride is upon us! The San Diego Leather Realm is back again this year, educating those who are “kink” curious.

The kink curious persons are normally those who have kinky thoughts, but most of the time feel they are the only ones who feel that way, until they meet other like-minded men and women who are into the same thing. It is then that their fantasies transform into reality.

Some of the most notable kinks are bondage, discipline and sadomasochism – aka BDSM. BDSM can be as minimal as just tying someone up with rope. The person doing the tying is not always referred to as a sadist. They could just be the willing partner who has the desire to transfer energy to the masochist. The masochist, on the other hand, wishes to be tied up; it gives them a sense of submission.

The profile of a masochist could be someone who during their day-to-day professional lives has authority over others. They might crave the need to relinquish that authority, and by being tied up they give up control. They require nothing, but to be tied up, and perhaps blindfolded. They go into a headspace that relinquishes them of all control, and places them in a euphoric frame of mind, pleasing and relaxing to them!

A masochist can also be submissive in nature, just born that way, deriving the same pleasure. A sadist does not necessarily have to be a “strapping man!” He can be your average guy; not strapping, striking or overly handsome, just your “average Joe, or Jane!” Men tie up women and vice versa, men tie up men, as do women tie up other women.

On the other end of the spectrum there are fetishes that some would call extreme. In the leather community, handkerchiefs worn in either the left or right pocket distinguish a lot of these fetishes. A handkerchief worn in the left pocket signifies that you are a top/dominant; worn in the right pocket means you a bottom/submissive.

I must stress that these kinks and fetishes are practiced by both sexes.

Since this is a family publication, I won’t go into graphic descriptions, but I challenge you to look them up and see what might intrigue you. I will give you a few hints, and not in any particular order of their extremes, because what might be extreme to one might not be to another.

So this weekend at San Diego Pride, stop into the Leather Realm “The Back Alley” and ask questions. The more mature your question, the more mature the answer you will receive.

Here is the rundown of what you can expect.

There will be presenters Saturday, July 16, starting at 1:30 p.m. on Embracing the Erotic Side of Your Leather Journey. At 2:45 p.m., you will have Bend Your Gender. At 4 p.m., you will be informed on the topic of Things that Pinch. Following the gender bender at 5:15 p.m., presenters will talk to you about Being Open to the Relationship That Finds You. You don’t want to miss the caning at 6:30 p.m.

On Sunday, things pick back up at noon with Sex, Gender and Play, followed by The Art of Sensation Play, Sex, Magic and Primal Florentine flogging. At 3:45 p.m., if you want to learn the terminology, then stop by and take notes. The evening finishes at 5 p.m. with a little Electricity Play.

The community awareness forum will be going on all day, giving you insight on how the internet is making us socially retarded, bringing the community together in new ways that work really well, safe sex practices and leather and sober living, concluding with a meeting of the “Friends of Bill.” I hope some of this has intrigued you.

Wait, there is more. Come on out and explore, see the spiritual and the family side of the leather community.

Mama Sandy Reinhart from San Francisco will be in San Diego. She has been dubbed the “Mama” of the leather family because she adopts all of us who work behind the scenes and contribute to the charities that she believes in. A lot of these charities aren’t just LGBT related. They are national as well as international charities. Come to her reception at Pleasures and Treasures on Friday at 8:30 p.m.

I, like all of Mama’s boys and girls, wear the name badges with the name she bestowed upon us. It’s a badge of honor. I am “Mama’s Leather Sir.”

Mama will speak Saturday at the Leather Realm’s “Back Alley” on Community, Volunteerism and Family. There will also be a Mama’s family reunion picture taken.

Before or after hearing Mama speak, visit the San Diego Leather History Project and learn about the amazing and long-standing history of the San Diego leather community. The Realm has bootblacks, a niche market and art, art, art.

To top off the evening, you can try some of the things you’ve read about here under the guidance and instructions of the ambassadors. I think there might be some puppies in attendance as well! And yes, if you like, someone will be there to take your picture to capture that moment when you started on your kinky journey.

Were you there? Did you experience the energy? Did you feel the excitement? If you did, then you know that I’m talking about the 2012 California Leather Sir/boy Community Bootblack and Puppy Contest held at Queen Bee’s on Saturday June 18. It was off the chain, literally!

After the National Anthem was performed by T-roy, San Diego’s very own Ms. Roxy Bleu introduced the six competitors: Sir Sam Fenix of Lancaster, Sir Dino Garcia of Long Beach, boy Zack of Long Beach, Pup Britt of San Diego, Slut Pup Chris of San Diego and Pup Zigzag of Los Angeles. The theme for the contest was locker room and the stage was set with a stadium backdrop.

It was very competitive. The contestants came out to the theme from Chariots of Fire playing in the background. Then we pumped it up with some Rock Jock tunes, and the games began! Contestants appeared on stage draped in towels, wearing only swimsuits or some really little underwear, donated by Jagermeister. Off went the towels.

When the smoke cleared, and the ultimate fighting, rough housing and speeches were done, Sir Sam is 2012 California Leather Sir, boy Zack is 2012 California Leather boy and Slut Pup Chris is 2012 California Puppy. Sir Dino and Pup Britt were First Runner-ups in their respective categories. Our head judge Tom D. assembled an all-star cast of judges who had the task of selecting our winners. Thanks to the rodeo for making the bar happen.

Glitz Glam led the Malashock dancers into the auditorium on leashes and entertained the packed house with a steamy performance to the tune of S&M by Rihanna. How apropos!

The lovely Caryl of Club-X corralled a few men to assist her with displaying one of the most professional silent auctions I’ve seen in a while. She stepped in and took control. And for all she did, I applaud her for helping raise funds to get the current and future contestants to the international contest.

The after-party continued on at the San Diego Eagle, where the winners were introduced to a very crowded leather bar. The contestants received patches for their leather vest, medallions and gift packages from statewide vendors and donors.

The Sir and boy will go on to compete next year at the 2012 International Leather Sir/boy contest. They will be making appearances around California for the next year, and for sure in San Diego.

An interesting fact about the Sir and boy winners; they’re all in their 20s! What a good sign. Youth and vitality is returning to the community. The leather community is building leaders for tomorrow. I was very impressed also by the young men who came up to me and said, “Next year, I’m going to run!” I’ll be waiting on your application!

We, the mentors and elders look forward to educating, teaching traditions and cultivating the credo of trust, honor and respect. That credo spans across the leather, Levi, bear, kink and fetish communities. As Sir Sam stated in his speech, “We are hungry for it, and we want it!” So to everyone within the reaches of this column, if you’re interested and you’re not sure, come on, hang out! You too, might become a member of a leather family even in your 20s, 30s, or perhaps in your 50s. Remember a boy is not an age, it’s a frame of mind.

This year was the debut of the Puppies. I can tell you that after speaking with the judges of this contest, some seasoned members actually told me that they learned a lot and are willing to learn more. So Slut Pup Chris and Britt, I challenge you to educate and breed more puppies. I challenge you to bring honor and respect to your pack! I challenge you to bring us a pup next year at 2013 California Leather Sir/boy, Bootblack and Puppy Contest, right here in your own backyard. I also make that challenge to the bootblacks. Start grooming them now. Let’s get some boots in the bar or any other events!

Sir Miles and boy shawn hosted a cigar social, sponsored by Man-Upp, at the Redwing on Sunday after the contest, which was very well attended. The winners were on hand and were introduced by Roxy.

Over the years, the leather community has supported numerous charities. During the AIDS crisis, not that it’s over, the community created and financially supported organizations like Mama’s Kitchen, The Food Pantry and Being Alive. These organizations provide food and services to members stricken by what was once a terminal illness that left its mark not only on the gay community, but the world.

Groups like the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, created in San Francisco, have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for social and political causes. San Diego started its own order of Sisters in 2005, The Asylum of the Tortured Heart. Sisters are men and women donned in nuns outfits that go out and manifest to the community at large. They perform outreach for safe sex, promote a life of non-guilt and perform blessings for entertainment.

The cowboys are brothers to the leather community. Just like leathermen, they wear chaps and like leathermen, they wear boots. And both groups wear jeans!

The cowboys, like the Sisters, are 501c3 organizations. As 501c3 organizations, they are non-profit and they give back to the community. Every year, annual rodeos are held in cities across the United States. The San Diego Gay Rodeo just recently had their event in hot Palm Springs. And in Palm Springs it’s not just the weather that’s hot, so are the men.

Keep your eyes open for the rodeo advertisements, and then check it out. You might get roped – or is that at a leather event? Like I said, they’re not far apart!

A few years ago, San Diego had a group called the Cash Cows. The Cows, just like the other community groups, would go to events, collect donations and contribute to needy causes. The Cows were one of the first groups in San Diego to organize a fundraiser for hurricane Katrina relief in New Orleans.

Before the economy took a tank, San Diego held the annual leather community awards. The awards would recognize individuals, groups, clubs and businesses that contributed to the success of the San Diego leather, Levi, bear, kink and fetish communities. Some notable groups recognized were Submissive Voice, Bears, Imperial Court, Pleasures and Treasures, San Diego Eagle and Pecs Bar, all of which are still promoting benevolence today.

Some organizations, like the San Diego Leather boys and the Leather boys of San Diego have restructured, but you can still see the fruits of their labor in San Diego.

A lot of organizations not only bring entertainment to San Diego, they bring income to the community. The San Diego Bears and The Bears of San Diego have held annual events like the Mr. Bear contest and Sun Bear Weekend for many years now. The bears are our furry, frisky and friendly friends.

The leather community also includes our pan-sexual groups like Club-X, who cater to our straight, bi-sexual and transgender men and women. At a Club-X function, you might find your traditional definition of a kinky straight couple, or bi-curious folks. They socialize for coffee first, and then they play later.

There is something for everyone in the leather community. You can see for yourself at the Leather Realm during San Diego Gay Pride in July.

Contest this weekend!

This Friday, stop by the San Diego Eagle and meet the contestants for the 2012 California Leather Sir, boy, Bootblack and Puppy Contest being held at Queen Bees, 3925 Ohio St. San Diego (North Park) 92104 on Saturday night. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the contest starts at 7 p.m. The contest will be filmed by Third World Media from San Francisco.

Contestants are running for Leather Sir, boy, Bootblack and Puppy. The emcee is San Diego’s own Ms. Roxy Blue. There will be a special performance by the San Diego 2010 Winner of So You Think You Can Drag, Glitz Glam! The rodeo is hosting the bar and the after-parties on Saturday are at the Eagle and a cigar social at the Redwing on Sunday, hosted by California Leather Sir 2010, Sir Miles and boy Shawn.

The contest promises to be very exciting, due in part to the fantasies and the introduction of the California Puppies. Tickets are on sale at Pleasures and Treasures, who by the way is in the process of moving to a new location on University, next door to the Water Lady. Tickets are also on sale at the Eagle and The Crypt on Park Boulevard.

Congrats to a San Diego hero, Mr. Anthony Rollar, who won second runner-up at International Mr. Leather (IML) held in Chicago, Memorial Day weekend. Also, thanks to everyone who contributed to my wonderful birthday weekend. But I celebrate the entire month of June, so it ain’t over! And to my pen pals, keep those cards and letters coming. As a last thought, I would like to say my farewells to a champion of the leather community, George Wong of L.A. George passed on to the next life on June 6. He had his fingers in just about everything in California and across the nation. He is already missed. George was a community man and a friend!

IML send-off for Mr. San Diego Leather 2010, Anthony Rollar (center), May 15

The San Diego family, which includes the Imperial Court, puppies, sisters, cowboys, bears, local business owners, men and women of the leather community and a few elders, all came together on Sunday, May 15 at Dutch’s “Pink Palace,” a beautiful estate, to send-off Anthony Rollar, Mr. San Diego Leather 2010, to International Mr. Leather (IML) in Chicago, Memorial Day weekend. Everyone greeted each other with smiles, hugs and laughs.

Kurt, Mr. San Diego Leather 2011, organized the gathering. Anthony gave a heartwarming speech to thank everyone for their support. I would like to commend him for all his hard work, dedication and earning his cover. It is well deserved.

In past columns, I explained Sirs are dominant and boys are submissive. I am a Sir, and I have a boy, cubby Jeff, who wears my collar. (Remember, respect the collar; don’t touch it, please.)

Regarding Bootblacks, they can either be dominant or submissive, yet they’re committed to leather care. They love the smell, the feel and have a great passion for taking care of leathers. Their fetish could be feet/boots, but they care for, and condition leather jackets, chaps, pants and other leather gear. If you want to know how to care for leather, seek out a Bootblack. If you’re turned on by the smell of leather and the way it feels against your skin, and you’re reading this column for the first time, you’re already into leather.

Now let’s talk about dogs and puppies. Grrr! They are unique. Part boy, part dog, part companion, part servant, yet very protective and in need of supervision. Very loyal.

Here’s a dog fact I bet you didn’t know. A “devil dog” was once, or is currently, a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. He’s very butch, and needs a strong handler.

Be wary; don’t jerk a dog’s chain. Although dogs and puppies share “some” of the same characteristics, they’re all different. Some wear masks, some don’t, some walk on all fours, and some don’t. But they’re all loyal companions.

Want to see what this puppy thing is all about? Then come out in June to the California Leather Sir, boy Community Bootblack and Puppy Contest (CLSB). Meet them face-to-face. If they like you, they’ll let you rub their heads. You just might want to take one home. They’re very entertaining. But keep in mind: it’s their headspace, not yours. So please respect it.

As the producer of this contest, I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing, emailing, befriending and rubbing a lot of heads. Rouff!

Congratulations to Mr. San Diego Leather 2010, Anthony Rollar. He was selected as the second runner up at this year’s International Mr. Leather (IML).

The CLSB crew, me, my sidekick Chris, Tom D, Uncle Curtis, Prince Royal Michael Lobo, Sir Miles and my cubby Jeff and the rest of crew, are all being advised by our other family members: Gary, affectionately known as mother, and my Aunties Mark and Wayne (Roxy).

The judging panel is made up of some fresh new faces, some seasoned leather folk and current and past titleholders.

The weekend kicks off Thursday, June 16 with the arrival of contestants and judges from all over California and the United States. Members of the San Diego Leather Community are volunteering to share their homes with our contestants and judges. This is the old school way from back in the ’80s and ’90s – and now considering the economy, it’s economical. We’ll probably start hanging out at the Eagle on Thursday night.

The rest of the contestants and the judges will arrive Friday. There will be a private social gathering so that judges and contestants can get to know each other. Afterwards, at 10 p.m. everyone will gather at the San Diego Eagle where we will introduce the contestants to the general public. On Saturday morning, the judges will interview each contestant.

After the interviews, the contestants will go to Queen Bees and familiarize themselves with the venue, do microphone checks and have a run through of the program. At 6 p.m. the doors to Queen Bees will open for a social hour and the contest starts at 7 p.m.

The emcee for the evening is San Diego’s own Ms. Roxy Bleu. During the evening, there will be a hot performance by Glitz Glam and the Malashock dance company.

After the contest, everyone will converge on the San Diego Eagle to round out the evening. If you purchase a ticket at the Eagle on North Park Way, it will come with a parking coupon. Once parked, you can stroll around the corner to the contest, which is less than half a block away, and then afterwards stroll back to the Eagle – no driving.

During the contest, there will be a cocktail bar, hosted by the San Diego Gay Rodeo Association. Eros Galleries will feature leather art and is the CLSB host vendor. A silent auction will also be available for public bidding. You can also purchase tickets to the contest at Pleasures and Treasures on University or The Crypt on Park for $15.

Over the past 10 years, I have had the opportunity to participate and compete in various contests throughout California and the United States. I got my roots at Wolf’s Bar in 2003 as Mr. Wolfs. I then went on to compete for Southern California Leather Sir 2003, which catapulted me to International Leather Sir 2003 in St. Petersburg Fla. All this happened over a span of six months.

I have been the den daddy, where I coach and assist the contestants, for the Mr. San Diego Leather contest for the past five years. I enjoy working with the contestants, helping them become comfortable, listening to their speeches, getting them dressed to go on stage so they can dazzle the judges and the audience.

Some call it a pageant, but it’s much more than that! First, the contestants commit to running for the title by turning in the applications, meeting and talking to the producers that help prepare the contestants mentally. We accept all those who are willing to be transformed into the leaders of tomorrow. What a great feeling!

During the weekend of June 17-19, 2011, San Diego will be host to the California Leather Sir, boy, Community Bootblack and Puppy contest at Queen Bees Art and Cultural Center (3925 Ohio Street in North Park). This contest is a spin-off of Drummer, which ended early in 2000. Drummers were known to be the bad boys of the leather community. They were known to wear their sex, kinks and fetishes on their sleeves and in their back pockets, too.

Two weeks ago, I attended the first Long Beach Leather Pride at Pistons Bar. It was a great time. A group of us caravanned up and stayed at the leather house of one of my mentors. He prepared us meals and we sat around the fire as he took us down memory lane of yesteryear. Although my friend is not physically able to perform all the leather feats he once did, he shared his knowledge with hopes that his leather legacy will be passed on.

AIDS and safe sex

AIDS devastated the world 30 years ago and the gay community lost a fair share of men. Those men were not aware that their sexual practices would actually take many of their young lives. Today, education is the key.

This past week, my friend Ian, an associate at Walgreens, shared with me his part in a quest to help protect the world. He is working with Sir Richard’s Condoms, a company that gives free condoms to those countries where AIDS is at epidemic proportions. For every condom sold, Sir Richard donates a condom to those countries. Look for that 1971 checkered VW van parked at Walgreens.

Bear Night

Did you know the hottest dance going on in San Diego, Bear Night, only happens once a month at Numbers? And what a good time it is. I haven’t seen that many mustache’s and beards, boots and jeans in a bar dancing like that in a while. Everyone looked like he had just stepped out of a magazine.

During the last dance, I decided to talk to the staff. I talked to Travis, a bartender at Numbers, and I asked him how he liked the crowd. Honestly speaking, he said, “They know what they want, they drink, and they also tip well.”

The energy was fantastic. So, I decided to also talk to the DJ, Jonathan, who has the natural ability to keep the crowd on the dance floor. It was great!

San Diego happenings

I would like to wish 2010’s Mr. San Diego Leather, Anthony Rollar, well on his journey to Chicago. By the time my next column comes out, in two weeks, he will have gone to International Mr. Leather (IML), competed and made San Diego proud.

In 1979, Chuck Renslow and his partner Dom Orejudos (Etienne) started the International Mr. Leather contest, which grew from its humble beginnings of Mr. Gold Coast Contest, a bar contest. The contest attracted contestants not only from Chicago, but from surrounding states as well. The contest quickly outgrew the Gold Coast Leather Bar and was moved downtown to one of the Michigan Avenue hotels.

In 1979 David Kloss of San Francisco was sent by the Brigade Bar to compete and he became the first International Mr. Leather (IML). Also at the time San Francisco crowned its first Emperor, the late Mr. Marcus Hernandez. He and the reigning Empress were invited to Chicago to crown the First Emperor and Empress of Chicago. Rumor has it that Emperors would come from the leather community and the Empress was an esteemed drag queen or performer.

Mr. and Ms. San Diego are products of both IML and International Ms. Leather (IMSL).

According to Mr. Marcus, long before IML in 1972, the Phoebe’s bar in San Francisco had the first bar contest to commemorate its tenth anniversary. The bar had its second and last Mr. Phoebe’s contest and the same guy won again.

The now defunct, International Mr. Drummer and International Drummerboy contests were founded in San Francisco around 1979. Both were known as erotic titles. The members wore their sexuality on their sleeves. Drummer is now called LeatherSIR and Leatherboy, and the California edition will be in San Diego the weekend of June 17-19.

That’s pretty much it, in a nut shell, how leather contests got started. They were coined by some as the Ms. America of Leather – a beauty contest, because all of the men who competed and won were very strikingly handsome guys. That can still be pretty much said today, but it’s been hyped a bit more.

The contests of the recent past have been used to raise funds for the gay community. Most of the proceeds go to charities like Mama’s Kitchen, which provides meals for those with AIDS, and Being Alive, which provides services like laundry, moving, peer counseling, case management and housing referrals to those who are HIV positive. The contest also raises money for children’s charities and safe sex education, just to name a few.

The Eagle bars, which are located in most large cities also sponsor bar contests. The winners become spokesmen for the bar. They put on fun events in the bars for entertainment and also to raise money for charities. The bar titleholders also can go on to compete for IML.

Should they win IML, they take on a platform. Their platform can be anything from drug and alcohol abuse awareness to preservation of leather history.

All in all, winners of contests can go on to become our community leaders. As a community leader, one gains the respect of the elders; those who have come before you. They bestow upon you the knowledge that they have gained over the years. With that knowledge, the new and upcoming titleholders are challenged to keep things going, as well as make a name for themselves.

Some titleholders complete their title year and retire from community work. But just as soon as they retire, a new one steps up, takes the reins and can become dynamic, like Anthony Rollar, Mr. San Diego Leather 2010. Anthony has proven himself to the community at large. He’s done the fundraising and he’s made himself visible at home in San Diego and across the country.

Being a titleholder is not all fun, games and sex. As a titleholder, you travel, judge contests, meet many people and then travel back home – all in one weekend. Everyone knows your name; you smile, nod and say, “Nice to meet you, too!” And you hope the next time you’ll remember a few names.

Ask Bryan Teague, American Leather boy 2010 and also Mr. San Diego Leather 2009. Bryan got his feet wet in San Diego, literally. Bryan and his Daddy were living on a boat in the San Diego Harbor when he became Mr. San Diego Leather 2009. And yes, there were challenges!

I hope you see my trend here. What I am saying is that there has been a long list of Mr. San Diego Leathers, who have done great things for our community and they make it look easy, but, “on the contrary.”

As for the current Mr. San Diego Leather 2011, Kurt, he’s already on the go. Since he won Mr. San Diego Leather in March, he’s travelled California, from San Francisco to L.A., and made a pit stop in Utah.

And who pays for these trips, one might ask? Well hopefully there are travel funds raised during the contest, supported by members like you. You, the San Diegan, actually put your representatives on the map! And of course the titleholders, so dedicated to their cause, are always digging deep into their own pockets. You got to look good! You got to represent!

Incidentally, this column was supposed to be about the 2011 California Leather Sir/boy, Bootblack and Puppy Contest (CLSB) coming to San Diego June 17-19, but I got so wrapped up in the leather history of the contests during my research that you will get to read more about CLSB in mid-May. Since I started writing this column for the San Diego LGBT Weekly, many new people have started to frequent many of the places that I’ve mentioned. I’ve had the pleasure to meet a few of them. I have been asked many questions about the leather community and have received comments like, “I have always been interested in the leather side of the tracks, but I was afraid of it because of the whips and chains and stuff, but now I have seen that the leatherfolk are really nice, out there, but nice. But then again, I’m here!”

Many of them have recognized my picture and called me by name. “Hey Mike, I read your column and I liked it and learned a lot.” Thank you for those kind words.

I give out my business cards and receive emails from guys like Ray, who on his first night at the Eagle was dressed in sweat pants, but the next weekend he was in jeans and boots. He told me he wanted to dress the part. Hey Ray, you looked good buddy! Now he knows that he can be a white collar business professional by day and a leatherman by night. I expect to see him again.

I also remember a conversation with a new member of the leather community. He who told me that he would only go to non-leather bars with his friends, then after a while he would escape and head over to the leather bar so he could let his hair down and be himself. What I’ve seen is that the leather bar is somewhat of a rite of passage to many men and women. The leather scene allows them to let it all hang out!

Speaking of letting it all hang out, if you have not made it yet, Numbers is jumping the first Saturday of each month with the Bear Dance. It’s off the hook!

I would also like to thank the community for the support given to Mr. Anthony Rollar during his Cigar Social at Bourbon Street. It was held upstairs in a very intimate setting and hosted by his partner, the dynamic GlitzGlam. Your support brought in about $1,000, all to help Anthony make his journey to International Mr. Leather (IML), Memorial Day Weekend. California is known for having great representation at the international leather events.

Out of all the cities across the United States, San Diego has a bumper crop of over achievers. We have consistently placed in the top ten at IML out of 50 plus contestants and done the same or better at the women’s contest as well. I could go on to name a few of the titles, but I run the risk of either making a mistake on the name or the title. People like Jo, Annie, Roadkill, Tom, Gary, Curtis, Wayne, Ron and Tom and Tim who mentored me and my siblings, Adam, Karen, Caryl, Robert, and Kelley. Then there are folks I’ve helped along like David, Bryan, Anthony, Miles, Cobi, Mickey, Mikey and Tiger. There is not enough space to name everyone, but they all know who they are and will love me anyway.

There is no set path to enter the leather community. You are normally introduced to someone who will introduce you to others and you grow on from there. It’s a very close-knit community all across the country. If you need a place to stay on your way to Ft. Lauderdale, someone knows someone who will take good care of you.

So what brings you to the leather community? Have you reached aged 40, and you’re looking for a seasoned Daddy? Are you a hot boy, looking to push your adrenaline levels to the max? Are you looking for change, something new, something different? Do you want to explore that side of you that’s yearning for attention? You’re in one of the best places to do it: San Diego! Our weather allows you to dress it up, or strip it down!

If you go to the bar the first time and you don’t meet anyone, then don’t worry! Take that opportunity to sit back, look around, and watch.

This past week at Pecs, during their Bear Night, I had the pleasure to meet a gentleman from Virginia. He was here on business and I asked him to join me and the guys at our table. We enjoyed his company for the rest of the evening. He said he would be back.

As a member of the leather community, I have been privy to the love and compassion of my leather family since my inception more than 10 years ago. I was raised by the San Diego leather community and mentored by former and present community leaders, who took me under their wings and nurtured me to the man that I am today. So in return, I’m doing the same.

Over the past couple of weeks, I had the pleasure of observing my brothers and sisters display their love and compassion for others to witness. The San Diego leather community received many visitors these past few weeks and displayed exemplary togetherness, mentorship and camaraderie. Feedback on the past three weeks has been outstanding. Congrats to Adam, Annie and the crew for a job well done – they really put on a show. We don’t do just contests, or just hang out in bars; we go to movies, do dinner, picnics and have coffee. Brunch and camping are our favorites. We love to travel. This past weekend a few of us attended L.A. Leather Pride. Let’s talk about mentoring. One does not just walk into the leather community. It comes with protocols. In my first column, I mentioned the hierarchy or the organized structure of the community. Today, I will start at the bottom, because everyone knows a good bottom really can make or break a scene. What’s a bottom you ask; it could be a boy, girl or boi! They are the submissive ones. They can, if they are good, top from the bottom. Oh, now you would like to know what’s a top. Tops are the final decision makers, so they think, the dominants. A good bottom helps his top feel in control. The hierarchy consists of folk who have been in the leather community for a few years; let’s call them Elders. They have gone through the mentoring process more or less through attrition. Some start out as bottoms, but then again there are some born tops. Should you ever want to learn something about leather kinks or fetishes, seek out an elder, and then you can learn to play safe!

They can be referred to as Masters, Daddies, Dominants or Dominatrix. Some are known as uncles, or mammas too, all receiving the same respect. Approach an Elder for advice with sincerity, compassion and the truth. They reek of wisdom and knowledge. If they tell you to sit back and watch, do it! You’re going to learn something about yourself, and others around you. They’ve done it all, and you’ll hear about it. But all B.S. aside, they’re very sane! Elders can teach tops to be great tops, and bottoms to be even better. They allow you to experience things that you thought about and want to experience. Now here is the kicker, a relationship with an Elder is not a romantic one, it’s a mentorship. History tells us that a Roman soldier would take a young handsome page under his wing and teach him the ropes on how to be a warrior. At the end of the day they would play, cuddle and sleep together, but once the warrior took a mate, the play would subside. So, all of the training and teaching that a leatherman or woman receives is done with mutual consent.

I wrote this column with passion to express to you, the novice, my future brothers and sisters the values that leather folk hold true. Look at the last words of each of the last paragraphs and you will find the leather creed: safe, sane and consensual. These also come with trust, honor and respect.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the honor of watching a taping of He Said, She Said, hosted by Ophelia and Aaron. They interviewed all the current leather titleholders. It was very informative and very entertaining. Last weekend, the Eagle had their monthly underwear contest, and rumor has it that Sir Miles won! The Bears San Diego had their annual contest at the Hole on Saturday as well, and of the three contestants Mark Flores is now Mr. Bear San Diego 2011. The Bears raised more than $10K and donated $5,000 each to Mama’s Kitchen and the Matthew Sheppard Foundation. The turn out was great!

• Friday, April 8 the Fetishmen are hosting Dress It Up! Strip It Down! at the San Diego Eagle.

• On Sunday, April 9 at 12:30 p.m. ClubX in conjunction with Submissive Voice is hosting Game Day at the Joyce Beers Center in Hillcrest.

• Also on Sunday, the handsome Anthony Rollar will be hosting an IML fundraiser cigar social at Bourbon Street from 4 to 7 p.m.

• Pecs, in conjunction with Three Olive Vodka are hosting a Bear Night on April 13 at 8 p.m.

• On April 14 at 7:30 p.m. ClubX is having a Ritual Body Marking workshop at Joyce Beers.

Mr. San Diego 2011, Kurt Wendelborg

Now that Leather Pride has come and gone, I’d like to explain some basics of leather. To help those of you who want to understand, or if you are just curious about leather, here is a little more history, which will tell you about things that are happening today.

Leather has always been intriguing to a lot of folks, gay and straight. Here are a few things that you might see online, in the bars or perhaps on the street.

Online you might see this as a typical profile heading: “Daddy Looking For A Boy!” What this means is that a dominate male (a “Daddy,” always capitalized) is looking for a submissive male (a “boy,” always lower case), who is willing to please Daddy. Now, let me explain that boys want to please, but at the same time, Daddy does not want a door mat. Daddy wants someone who derives pleasure from making him happy. The boy wants to bring joy and smiles to a man he adores. That’s the basic mind set of a boy. Boys do not want to be humiliated, well, that’s another form of play. A boy appreciates hearing, “Thank you, boy!” It’s just that simple. The boy knows what he wants.

Now when you’re in the bar or on the street, you might see a boy with a chain around his neck and it’s locked. Who has the key? Daddy does. The boy is a “collard” boy. The chain and lock is referred to as a collar. It signifies, to all within eyesight, this boy has a Daddy. Daddy has placed the collar on the boy in a ceremony just like a wedding, either in private or amongst friends. The collar is like a wedding band.

As a rule, “Do not touch the boy’s collar” out of respect for the relationship of him and Daddy. The boy might grab your hand should you invade his space. Boys are not confrontational. They are loveable, cuddly, cute and huggable.

But you should not just walk up to one and hug him unless you know him and his Daddy, but you can ask Daddy first, “Sir, may I hug your boy?” He might nod yes or he might pull his boy into him to protect him. Daddies are very protective of their boys. So ask permission and be cordial.

Now slaves on the other hand are the sole property of their Masters. Note: You do not address a slave. You will know one when you see one. Most slaves do not interact with outsiders at all. Should you approach a slave, he might not speak. Don’t be disappointed. Both boys and slaves have chosen to give themselves to Daddy or Master. Speaking of Daddies, our San Diego Leather Community has just given birth to a new Daddy. Mr. Anthony Rollar was presented his cover during the Titleholder Appreciation Cocktail Night on March 17 at Numbers by Mr. Dickerson. This is one of the most memorable moments in a Leatherman’s journey. Covers are earned, not given or bought. This night, Mr. Dickerson presented Mr. Anthony Rollar with his own personal cover – a tremendous honor. Congrats to Mr. Anthony Rollar, who is also going to International Mr. Leather (IML) in Chicago to represent San Diego, Memorial Day Weekend. He has been working toward this for a little while and I will be there to support him. It should be big fun!

Upcoming leather events

Here are some things that are coming up that you should know about:

• Mr. Bear San Diego is going to be at the Hole on March 26

• Tony’s up and fast moving group, Fetishmen, is hosting another “Dress It Up! Strip Down!” at the San Diego Eagle on Friday, April 8

• The San Diego Eagle is also having a bus run to Long Beach on April 17. What happens on the bus, stays on the bus. Leather folks should not gossip; should not!

• If you want to pony-up, then go to Palm Springs the weekend of April 29, because the San Diego and Palm Springs Rodeo Association are teaming up for your enjoyment. Some of us will be heading to Long Beach Leather Pride that same weekend.

• Now in May, like I said, I and a few of my closest leather friends will be going to Chicago to support my brother, Mr. Anthony Rollar, as he competes for IML. Just to go is an experience. Ask Mr. Dickerson, Mr. Latham, just to name a few, who made me proud. (Speaking of Mr Latham: Adam, thank you, Annie, Michael, David and the rest of the crew for making Leather Pride another year to remember.)

• Last but not least, June 17-19 is the California Leather Sir/boy, Community BootBlack and Puppy Contest at Queen Bees in North Park. Sir Miles, California Leather Sir 2010, will be stepping down and Todd Bishop, 2011 will carry the torch for the rest of the year. Another Sir will also be chosen to bring up the rear. You will be able to get tickets at the Eagle, Pleasures and Treasures, The Crypt on Park and the Oblelisk Bookstore. Support the community businesses. It’s gonna be a show. I promise!

Emcee Annie Romano introduces the new Ms. San Diego Leather 2011, Beanstalk.

Ms. San Diego Leather 2011 is Beanstalk. She’s tall, has long legs, black hair and a charming personality with a wit! And, what a show of support from the leather, Levi, bear, cowboy, Imperial Court de San Diego, Sisters and puppy community of San Diego and the surrounding areas.

I liked the members and former members of the armed forces who went on stage, saluted the flag and stated name, rank and branch of service – how patriotic a way to represent and show pride! The National Anthem was sung by a U.S. Navy Intelligence Specialist.

We have come a long way, baby. The emcees were former U.S. Air Force Technical Sergeant, Annie Romano, and Ms. San Diego Leather 2010, Tiger. The reception prior to the contest was accompanied by a silent auction of various sought out items by members of the leather community.

After Beanstalk walked away with the title, it was time to leave Rich’s and head over to Mosaic in North Park for the victory party. As always, the leather folk ended up at the San Diego Eagle to fellowship and socialize. What a weekend party! Farewell Tiger, we’ll see you around the block!

Guess what? We’re gonna do it again this weekend!

Let’s get a sash husband for Beanstalk. Who will be Mr. San Diego Leather 2011? Will it be, Anthony, Dan or Kurt? Come out to Rich’s this Saturday night at 7 p.m. and show your support and hear the handsome Anthony Rollar, Mr. San Diego Leather 2010, give his step down speech.

This Saturday, the contest will be followed by the ever so popular LL Bear dance. So check in with your bartenders, especially that hot one at the front bar, who served me, then get ready to dance!

This week during the men’s contest, I’m the Den Daddy. I will be behind the scenes in the dressing room helping Mr. San Diego Leather 2011 prepare to go on stage. He will receive his medal, sash, patch and the title from Uncle Mark Holmes, an elder and former Mr. San Diego Leather. I will watch Mr. San Diego Leather 2011 join hands with his sash wife Ms. San Diego Leather 2011, Beanstalk. They are bound in leather, based on trust, honor, respect and devotion to the members of the LGBT community.

The next weekend, we’re gonna support our brother’s to the north in L.A. and go up for Mr. L.A. Leather on March 26. If you can’t make it to L.A., then stay at home and stop by Pecs or go to the Eagle for a good time. The nights to go to the Eagle are the first Wednesday of each month for Puppy Night and Thursday night to start your weekend.

Just in case you are wondering what does this Leather Pride stuff do for me and my community? Well I’m glad you asked! San Diego Leather Pride is a proud supporter of a few charities like the Women’s Leather History Project, The Center, and San Diego Leather History/museum Project, purveyed by Caryl. Last but not least, the San Diego leather community is a contributor to the Service Members Legal Defense Network, which stands by service members in situations like Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT).

How to find a leather daddy

If you are a leather boy, here are a few tips to find a Daddy. Stalk him! No, not really. Find out if they’re single. It’s best that way, but some Daddies have a stable of boys, willing and waiting to please him, which brings satisfaction to both parties.

It’s not always about you Daddy; the boys have a lot of control here. Boys pick the Daddy! Now boy, observe your prospective Daddy. If you like a funny Daddy, does he smile and laugh? If you want a stern Daddy, watch how those around him respond.

Check him out for a few weeks. Ask friends about him. Then, if you think he is that guy, approach him! Mind you, this review process can take weeks, or even a couple of months. And that’s fine. You want the crème of the crop!

This is what you say when you approach him. “Sir, if I may, I would like to speak with you.” Any respectful Sir, would say, “Please, go ahead!” Tell them that you have been admiring him from a distance and feel that he has the qualities and traits that you are looking for in a Sir/Daddy. Tell them what you expect, i.e. your kinks, your desires, your needs.

Now here comes the kicker. Ask him if he feels he can meet your needs. This is what you should get back! “I can accommodate you, and this is what I expect from my boy. Can you accommodate that?”

Either two things will happen, you will schedule a coffee date to talk, or at that moment, you will know if this is the Sir/Daddy for you! If so, hand him a card containing your contact information.

If not, be cordial and thank him for his time – start over! It can take time to find quality, but when you get it, it’s yours! I hope this helps you boy!

Someone asked me, “Who are you?” I am Sir Mike; former Mr. Wolfs 2003, California Leather Sir 2003 and International Leather Sir 2003, formerly known as “Mr. Drummer.” I and my boy live in Hillcrest/ North Park area. I’m a father, a grandpa and a Daddy to my leather cub boy. Most of all I am just a country boy from Texas living in America’s Finest City.

Fall-in! It’s a very familiar command to all members of the armed forces. It means get in formation, line-up, dress right dress and stand tall! Yes boys and girls, Sirs and Doms, it’s time to show your military leather pride.

This year, the San Diego Leather Pride Community is celebrating our roots! Yes, that’s right; the leather community gets it roots from the armed forces. Where did you think the shiny boots came from?

Back in the ’50s and ’60s when service members left the military, some lived in what today would be called a commune, i.e. leather houses. These houses to former service members were the equivalent to living in a platoon, a squadron; a cohesive team environment where one felt safe and secure; the barracks. That’s how everyone had been trained to live in the military, so they all had the same disciplines.

So after they returned home from the wars, they sought out other like-minded service members with those same disciplines. They were used to a hierarchy of those who cooked, those who cleaned, those who ironed, and those who commanded, counseled and trained. Some of those disciplines have carried over into the leather community today.

San Diego Leather Pride has chosen to honor our service men and women. How apropos, because the San Diego economy was pretty much built by members and former members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Army! As the story goes, when the deployed ships docked in San Diego, you would see a parade of white sailor uniforms coming into the Hillcrest and North Park communities.

Adam Latham, owner and producer of San Diego Leather Pride, himself attended a military school. Annie Romano, producer of Ms. San Diego Leather was a member of the U.S. Air Force. I am retired Air Force. There are so many more of us! The list can go on and on.

There are quite a few prior service men and women in the leather community throughout the United States, who have chosen to live by the creed they learned in the military: “Trust, Honor and Respect.” And they don’t take it lightly, but are very light hearted, warm and caring people.

I choose the leather community as my path because of its disciplines and the characteristics of the lifestyle. I grew up in a military household, which came with the disciplines of honesty, hard work and integrity.

So this month, March 2011, get your gear on. Suit up in your service dress, blues and whites. Display your ribbons and medals, that “you earned” for being a good troop or an outstanding service member. Come out and show how proud you are to have served your country.

There are a host of events that you can attend, starting with All Clubs Night at Joyce Beers Center in Hillcrest, March 10. It will be a fun-filled evening with a variety of clubs and organizations, like ClubX (a heterosexual mixed group), the Cowboys, the Bears, the boys, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and the new kids on the scene, the leather fetish men’s group and the puppies, just to name a few!

If you missed All Clubs Night, stop in at the Ms. San Diego Leather Meet and Greet at The Hole this Friday night. There, you will meet the contestants and more like minded individuals. If you don’t know anyone, I recommend you ask for Annie, Karen or Tiger. Tell them Sir Mike sent you, and they will take you by the hand and introduce you to some great folks.

In the leather community, the men support the women, and the women have always supported the men. So the following week, we’re going to do it all over again, but showcase the guys. At the guys events, ask for Adam, Anthony or boy bryan.

Both the Mr. and Ms. contests will be at Rich’s in Hillcrest at 7 p.m., with the Ms. this Saturday and the Mr. next Saturday. At these two contests, we will say so long to two great titleholders: Tiger, Ms. San Diego Leather 2010; and Anthony Rollar, Mr. San Diego Leather 2010. They have had a stellar year! And just because they are stepping aside doesn’t mean they’re gone.

People you might see at these events: Former Mr. and Ms. San Diego Leather; authors and editors of books and publications; Kane, the new Mr. San Diego Eagle 2011; producers of various leather contests and events from all over the world; actors and models from all forms of media; bar and business owners; members of the Imperial Court de San Diego; and of course me and my boy.

To the active duty members: You never know who you will meet at these events. It’s okay to be supportive, but keep in mind, it’s not final yet! So right now, we won’t tell, if you don’t tell. We can have fun waiting. And next year, you could be Mr. or Ms. San Diego Leather 2012!
